TOP 10 TIPS FOR PACKING YOUR ITEM

  • 1 Ensure your box is slightly larger than the article, so there is enough room for cushioning material around the contents.
  • 2 Remove all old labels from the box.
  • 3 Make sure outer containers are strong enough to hold your item.
  • 4 Place goods that might be affected by dirt, water or wet conditions inside a plastic bag.
  • 5 Wrap each item separately
  • 6 Wrap any sharp edges or protrusions in tape
  • 7 Fill all space in your containers with cushioning such as bubble wrap or polystyrene chips
  • 8 Tape the opening of your box and reinforce all seams
  • 9 Use a complete and correct address and include a return address on the box.
  • 10 Use a FRAGILE or THIS WAY UP sticker if necessary.
Green Packing
  • Re-use old boxes and materials. Ensure to remove old labels and addresses from the box before use
  • Choose an appropriately sized box – so you can surround your item with packaging material but not use unnecessary extra packaging
  • Use original packaging of item where possible
  • Buy and use biodegradable packaging materials, such as biodegradable packing peanuts
  • Try to use biodegradable packaging materials, use newspapers you already have as a packaging material (although avoid packing items that back ink might mark)
Bulky Items
Furniture

  • Disassemble the furniture if you can
  • Remove drawers that are likely to come loose and pack separately, or secure drawers closed
  • Remove furniture legs where possible, wrap each individually and place in a labelled bag. Secure to the underside of the furniture item
  • Protect corners with bubble wrap or a cardboard corner
  • Use furniture pads to prevent scratches and rips
  • Place any pillows or cushions in plastic bags
  • Pack in a rigid container with sufficient cushioning
Fridge

  • Empty, unplug and defrost your fridge for at least 24 hours before moving
  • Remove shelving and drawers and wrap separately in bubble wrap
  • Secure the door shut so it cannot open in transit

  • Clean your dishwasher by running it with dishwashing detergent and hot water while empty

Fishing Rods

  • Cover threads and fittings to prevent damage
  • Cushion all parts susceptible to dents, scuffs and scratches with packaging materials
  • Place documentation on flat, clean surfaces
  • Place in an appropriate container such as a double-wall corrugated box and fill all spaces with packaging materials

BOOKS

  • Wrap individually in bubble wrap
  • Using more layers on corners and spine of book
  • Place in a small box for extra protection
  • Protect thin soft-cover books with cardboard on both sides

  • Line entire box with a large piece of bubble wrap

  • Place plates on their side in the box
  • Fill any empty space with crumpled paper or other packaging material

LIQUIDS

  • Place inside a leak-proof container
  • Place into a outer box made of a strong material with a lid that cannot easily come loose
  • Place an absorbent material, such as cotton wool, between the first and second container

ELECTRONICS

  • Consult the manual first for moving directions
  • Remove any media (DVDs, CDs etc.) from the equipment
  • Unplug and wrap the wires and secure with twist-ties and label
  • Line the bottom of your box with anti-static packing material
  • Fill all space around and on top of the item with packing material
  • Mark the box fragile and indicate which way is up

LAMPSHADES

  • Find adequately sized box and place several sheets of packing paper over the open top of the box
  • Place the lampshade in the box top down, so the paper wraps around the shade
  • Do not fill extra space with crumpled paper or padding

  • Remove printing cartridge before postage
  • Place cartridges inside sealed plastic bags to help prevent leakage

  • If glass, apply masking-tape in a criss-cross pattern onto it
  • Secure items to a rigid material like plywood or plastic

  • Wrap sharp edges or points in polyurethane foam or a similar material or protect them with cork

  • Place coin/s in a plastic slip or other protective container.
